  • Evidence leads the team to an abandoned industrial building in Queens, where they discover a woman who looks like Beckett tied up with a remotely operated gun pointed at her. As they watch, it fires, and Castle believes Beckett has died. As he runs over, he realises that the woman is in fact someone else, later identified as Sydney Novic.
  • Castle visits Marcus Gates in prison in the hope of finding some lead previously overlooked in the hunt for Tyson. Gates suggest looking at a house in rural Putnam County where Tyson used to go for summer holidays as a child.
  • Castle visits the house, apparently alone, where he finds a video feed of Beckett in another location, tied up on an operating table, where Nieman is proposing to cut off her face.
  • Tyson appears, captures Castle and explains that he has lured him here to watch Beckett being tortured. Castle explains that this time it is he that is playing a game. It then emerges that Esposito and Ryan accompanied Castle to the house and are stationed at strategic points outside. Esposito fires a sniper shot through the window and kills Tyson on Castle's command.
  • The team race to the remote location to rescue Beckett. When they arrive, they find Beckett has freed herself from the operating table and killed Nieman with a scalpel.

Suspects[edit]

Marcus Gates - Felony Criminal/Murderer

  • Murder Victims: Linda Russo, Kim Foster
  • Evidence: Surveillance tape evidence, name badge with fingerprints, green and white rope found on his person during his attempted murder of Donna Gallagher, confession to Beckett, statements made to Castle by Tyson
  • Background & Notes: Criminal record shows that Gates is a violent, extremely intelligent sociopath with a long history of criminal activity. His mother died when he was four and he was placed in foster care, eventually developing a close relationship with a foster brother, Paul McCardle; McCardle is the "only person" that he cared about according to cell mate Jerry Tyson. Gates enjoyed prison and used his power there to protect Tyson in exchange for his help fund a surgery that McCardle needed.

Paul McCardle - Former groundskeeper

  • Murder Victims: Unintended accomplice to the murder of Kim Foster
  • Evidence: Surveillance tape evidence, surgery payment
  • Background & Notes: McCardle grew up in the foster care system, eventually developing a close relationship with a foster brother, Marcus Gates. He and Gates were close enough in appearance that Gates used McCardle as an unwitting accomplice to his murder by having McCardle double as Gates to create an alibi for him. McCardle has a history of stalking and violence towards women. He also suffered from a heart condition that caused him to sweat profusely, which was only surgically fixed when the money for the treatment was provided by Jerry Tyson.

Jerry Tyson aka "3XK" aka "The Triple Killer" - Serial Killer

  • Murder Victims: Directly responsible for the murders of Lauren Brackett, Melanie Sherman, Sheri Ort, Emma Keener, Rachel Gold, Sara Townsend, Tessa Horton, Susan Watts, Sydney Novic; indirectly responsible for the murders of Linda Russo and Kim Foster.
  • Evidence: Common MO (targeting blond women in their mid-20s, strangulation with green and white rope, posing them as if they were sleeping peacefully), statements made to Castle by Tyson, statements made to Castle and Beckett from the Castle look-a-like, bank account records for Joseph Vacher, barbed wire, loft, and precinct information used to frame Castle
  • Background & Notes: Per Castle's profile of Tyson, he had a dysfunctional relationship with his mother growing up before going into foster care. His MO to kill young blond women and stage their bodies peacefully is to "get revenge" because he both loved and hated his mother. Tyson is driven to kill primarily by his fascination with death and his desire to manipulate his victims before killing them. He likes to get "inside" their lives knowing that he will destroy them, and enjoys the planning and the "pageantry" of murder. Tyson is known to be extremely intelligent, leaving behind few if any clues behind for the police to pursue; usually those he does leave behind are left behind intentionally in order to lead the police to someone or something of his own choosing. He has a habit of using doubles and having others kill on his behalf to throw the police off as well. He developed a fixation with Castle because he perceived something of himself in Castle (he was "drawn to death" and has his own "repressed impulses") and more broadly with the team at the 12th precinct because they foiled his meticulously planned attempt to disappear. Following a shootout with Beckett and Castle, he fell off a bridge and was presumed dead by the NYPD, although his body was never found. His re-emergence as Michael Boudreau and the killing of Susan Watts put the team back onto his and Dr Nieman's trail; his and Nieman's attempt to kidnap and kill Beckett eventually led to both their deaths. He died after being shot by Esposito through the window of his hideout in the woods.

Phillip Lee - Chinese Mafia Member

  • Murder Victims: Jane Herzfeld
  • Evidence: Ryan's stolen service weapon, matching ballistics, duffel bag contents, statements made by Ben Lee to Ryan, wiretapped statements made by Phillip Lee to Ben Lee
  • Background & Notes: One of several children of Clifford Lee, his non-Americanized name is Chin Hai Lee Chang. He and his family run a Chinese mob from which no member is allowed to leave. He did a prison sentence in the same facility as Jerry Tyson, and got into altercation with him at one point. Later on they supposedly made peace with one another, but Tyson seeks his revenge on Lee by "gifting" him a stolen police pistol which he knows will attract the attention of the police when he uses it in the future. In spite of their criminal activity, the Lee children are all expected to do well in school. When Phillip's brother Ben falls in love with his tutor and tells Phillip that they are going to run away together, Phillip kills Jane to prevent this using the gun that Tyson gave him, unwittingly bringing upon himself extra police scrutiny. During a later confrontation with Ben, Phillip says that he didn't tell him he killed Jane because it was better that he not know, and then pulls a gun on Ben, threatening to kill him before being taken into custody himself by the police listening to Ben's wiretap from outside.

Dr. Kelly Nieman - Plastic Surgeon

  • Murder Victims: Suspected accomplice in the murder of Pam Hodges, Daniel Santos and Susan Watts
  • Evidence: Connections to both victims, lack of apparent resources for Carl Matthews to have funded Pam Hodges' lavish lifestyle upon taking her new "job" and Dr. Nieman's apparent wealth, connections to Florida and the boating/fishing community, suspicious disappearance, connections to 3XK, connections with New Start Horizons charity for women
  • Background & Notes: She grew up in Florida and is skilled at martial arts. She tells Beckett that her mission is to "seek perfection" through her work as a plastic surgeon and loves to self-promote her business. She volunteered her medical skills at the prison in which Tyson was an inmate; her volunteer activity exactly coincided with his sentence and she treated him after he got beat up, just before he escaped police custody. She appears to be intelligent, at least moderately well-off, and has a very detached, icy demeanor, explaining to Beckett without emotion how she and the victim - Daniel Santos - had a "purely physical" relationship. She claimed that she was being "set-up" by whoever was behind the murders of Hodges and Santos because they knew of their connections to her. Subsequently, her involvement with the New Start Horizons women's charity linked her unequivocally with Susan Watts, one of Tyson's victims, and Amy Barrett, one of his accomplices, both of whom she had surgically altered to look like Tyson's mother. She failed in her attempt to kidnap and kill Beckett and remove her face when Beckett broke free from her restraints on the operating table and killed Nieman with her own scalpel.

Carl Matthews - Serial Killer

  • Murder Victims: Pam Hodges, Daniel Santos, at least two others (not specified)
  • Evidence: Fishing line found in his backpack matches those used in the murders, surveillance tape evidence, confession to Beckett and Castle
  • Background & Notes: Held a variety of menial jobs, with no police record prior to confessing to the murders of Pam Hodges and Daniel Santos. He has spent time in at least New York and Florida, as well as possibly North Carolina. He stated that he "admires" the work of 3XK but that he is his "own man" and that he will confess to only "his kills - no more, and no less". He indicated that he enjoyed killing, that he remembers each murder in the "clearest detail" and that he will spend his time in prison reliving those memories.

Persons of Interest[edit]

Homeless Man

  • Rousted from the docks prior to the discovery of Pam Hodges' body by Carl Matthews - possible witness and/or involvement in the crime
  • Apparently present at the Starburst Motel when Carl Matthews is captured (unbeknownst to the team at the 12th Precinct)
  • Is a Caucasian male, has a distinctive cough and was dressed in a dark hoodie

Outstanding Questions[edit]

1. What exactly was the relationship between 3XK and Dr. Kelly Nieman and Carl Matthews?
2. Who roofied Dr. Parish's drink?
3. What happened to the 3XK files that were stolen?
4. Where is the money coming from that was used to fund Paul McCardle's surgery and the lavish lifestyle of Pam Hodges' in her new "job"?
5. What is the significance/message behind the "We'll Meet Again" song left for Beckett and/or Castle?
